William Arthur Philip Louis Mountbatten-Windsor (Prince William) was born on 21 June 1982 in London. On 4 August 1982 he was christened in the music room of Buckingham Palace.

Family
Prince William is the older son of the Prince of Wales (Prince Charles) and Diana, Princess of Wales, and has a younger brother, Prince Harry. His parents split-up at the end of 1992, which was announced by John Major, the then Prime Minister; 4 years later, on 28 August 1996, their marriage was dissolved, but Princess Diana stayed at Kensington Palace (). When Prince William was 15, his mother was killed in a car crash.

In November 2010 he announced his engagement with his long-term companion Kate Middleton. On 29 April 2011 he married his fiancée and thus became HRH Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus.

Education
At first, William attended Mrs Mynors School, then he went to Wetherby School (London) between 1987 and 1990. After that, he spent five years at Ludgrove School (Berkshire) and then went to Eton College where he studied History of Art, Geography and Biology [one cannot really "study" at a Public School - did he take his A-levels in these subjects?]. After a gap year, he started studying at St Andrews University (Scotland) and graduated in Geography in 2005.

Army
In 2006, Prince William became an army officer at Sandhurst and a Second Lieutenant of the Household Chivalry. Now he is in training in order to become a Search and Rescue Pilot for the Royal Air Force. In the RAF he is known as "Flight Lieutenant William Wales" ().

Charities and patronages
At the moment Prince William is the President or Patron of 13 charity organisations, but he also supports other charity organisations and events.

Her Royal Highness Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge (before Catherine Elisabeth "Kate" Middleton) was born on January 9, 1982 in Reading/Berkshire.
She is Prince William's wife whom she wed on April 29, 2011. The couple met at the University of St Andrews.

Kate is the daughter of Michael and Carol Middleton, who run "Party Pieces", a catering service for children. She has a sister, named Pippa, and a brother, named James. Thanks to the successful career of her parents, Kate had the opportunity to attend the best schools in England. She attended Marlborough College, a British boarding school in Marlborough, Wiltshire. After school she did a voluntary year of social service in Chile. Afterwards she studied History of Art at St Andrews where she met Prince William and graduated with him.

After graduating, she worked as an accessory-buyer at "Jigsaw" for about a year . Then she decided to start a career as a photographer but soon cast away this idea as well. In the summer of 2008 she started helping out at her parents' office. She has often been criticised for not having a steady job by the public, especially the press. It is said that the Official Household has often advised her to do some charity work.

Daughter of Elizabeth II. She was born on August 15, 1950.

Childhood and youth
Princess Anne was born in Clarence House while her father Philip was away in Malta for business. After the birth, Elizabeth left the children to nannies and followed her husband. Anne spent her first Christmas with her brother and their grandparents.

When she returned on January 1, 1951, Elizabeth saw her very ill father and asked Philip to come home. He should never return to his old position. On January 31, they left again for a journey, leaving the children with their grandparents. It was during that time that her grandfather King George died on February 5, 1952.

In general, she and her brother saw their mother only on rare occasions. Even when she was at home, she did not allow them to disturb her. Elizabeth's relationship with her children was always one of distance. But because Anne had a good relationship with her father she was better off than the other children.
Their upbringing was regulated: they were e.g. not allowed to eat in public. And in general they were thought they were different than other people. They always had to be perfect in their appearance. In that respect, Philip was even stricter than Elizabeth.

In contrast to Charles, Anne was a wild child. This continued during her teens when she e.g. jumped on stage in the middle of a musical and danced together with the actors. But she always paid much attention to who she was and who her mother was and she insisted that people would encounter her adequately. She shared the passion for horse-riding with her mother and enjoyed living in the countryside. Balmoral was a paradise to her. At school she did not work more than she had to, although she was not stupid, as her tutor, Cynthia Bee, from Benenden School said. Anne finished her education before the age of 18.

In 1969, she met 22 year old Sandy Harper, the son of a Lieutenant Colonel. He was a polo player and shortly after, they were always seen together. But their relationship did not last long. It might have been her tendency to domineer over other people. Anne continued with what she liked: horse-riding, sailing, skiing, opening a hospital or a school. But it was not much later that she had other men, i.e. Richard Meade and Guy Neville around her.

The first marriage
On November 14, 1973, she finally married captain Mark Philips of the Royal Dragoner Guard. Both had met in 1968 and he, too, was a passionate horse-rider, successful at Olympic Games as well. Their wedding was broadcasted all over the world. The Queen and Prince Philip did not like him much, he talked only about the army, horses and had a sense of humour they could not become friendly with.

On March 20, 1974, Anne and Mark were coming home from a film premier when their car was forcefully stopped by Ian Ball, who had planned to kidnap the Princess. He wanted to get a 3,000,000 pound ransom. Several people were injured and only Anne's courage and fierceness could thwart Ball's plan.

The children
1976, Anne and Mark settle a Gatcombe Park in Gloucestershire. There, their first son Peter Philips was born in 1977. A daughter, Zara, followed in 1981. Their parents decided not to give them any title and to keep them from the public eye. But Anne accepted the highest title of the Royal family - 'Princess Royal' - in 1987. Two years after that, Mark and she separated. They were officially divorced in 1989. Both were said to have had an affair. Andrew Parker-Bowles, the later husband of Camilla Shand was among Anne's former lovers and Mark had a child with another woman.

On 29 December 2010 her daughter-in-law Autumn gave birth to a baby girl named Savannah and made her and consequently the Queen a grandmother/great-grandmother for the first time.

The second marriage
In December 1992, Anne married Commander Timothy Laurence, equerry of the Queen. Anne's relationship with the press, which had been a frosty one before, got better and her reputation rose.

Her social engagement
During the late 80s and early 90s Anne travelled around for a Children's Fund to help hungry, homeless and sick people in Africa, the East, India and Russia. Because of her engagement in the well-being of others and her general awareness of problems, the wish for her becoming the next monarch developed. But this was impossible as Charles was the oldest son and thus the first in line in the succession of the throne.
The first marriage
On November 14, 1973, she finally married captain Mark Philips of the Royal Dragoner Guard. Both had met in 1968 and he, too, was a passionate horse-rider, moreover he has succeeded at Olympia.

On 29 December 2010 her daughter-in-law Autumn gave birth to a baby girl and made her and consequently the Queen a grandmother/great-grandmother.

Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise is the daughter of Elizabeth II. She was born on August 15, 1950.

Childhood and youth
Princess Anne was born in Clarence House while her father Philip was away in Malta for business. After the birth, Elizabeth left the children to nannies and followed her husband. Anne spent her first Christmas with her brother and their grandparents.

When she returned on January 1, 1951, Elizabeth saw her very ill father and asked Philip to come home, He should never return to his old position.

1572/3-1637. Dramatist, scholar, poet. One of the major rivals of William Shakespeare and representative of the Comedy of Humours.

Life
Ben(jamin) Jonson was born in or near London in 1572/3 as the son of a clergyman. After his education at Westminster School, he first worked as a bricklayer, then joined the military and later an acting group. In 1597, he became a player and playwright for the Henslowe's companies. In 1605, Jonson wrote his first Court Masque and from that time on began to constantly write masques for court. Almmost 30 years later, "his last masques were produced" (1633/4). In 1616 (the year Shakespeare died), Jonson was granted a pension by King James I, even though he was not officially appointed the first Poet Laureate. In the same year, he received an honorary MA from Oxford University and he also became a lecturer at Greshman College in London.
In 1628 Jonson suffered a stroke and he died in August 1637. He was buried at Westminster Abbey and his tombstone was engraved with the words "O rare Ben Jonson".
Jonson was described as arrogant, but he was also warm-hearted and his influence under James I was unlike no other's.
While Shakespeare was considered irregular, messy and chaotic (and in dire need of "improvement") during the time of the Restoration, Ben Jonson advanced to the status of model dramatist, because he kept to the (pseudo-)Aristotelean unities. There was even a school of writers which called itself "the sons of Ben".

Works
Jonson's first important play – a comedy – Every Man in His Humour was performed in 1598 by the Lord Chamberlain's Company (including William Shakespeare) and was printed in 1601. His first still existing tragedy Sejanus was performed at the Globe in 1603.
Two years later, his first Court Masque was performed "to accommodate Queen Anne’s desire to appear as a Negress".
One of his major plays – Volpone - was performed at the Globe and two universities.
Jonson also wrote two epitaphs for his first daughter and son: "On My First Daughter" (c. 1595) and "On His First Sonne" (1603) which were both published in his folio of 1616.
When a Republican party wins the General Election, their first act in power is to strip the royal family of their assets and titles and send them to live on a housing estate in the Midlands.
Exchanging Buckingham Palace for a two-bedroomed semi in Hell Close (as the locals dub it), caviar for boiled eggs, and servants for a social worker named Trish, the Queen and her family learn what it means to be poor among the great unwashed. But is their breeding sufficient to allow them to rise above their changed circumstances, or deep down are they really just like everyone else?

Works
Jonson's first important play – a comedy – 'Every Man in His Humour' was performed in 1598 by the Lord Chamberlain's Company (including William Shakespeare) and was printed in 1601. His first still exitisting tragedy 'Sejanus' was performed at the Globe by his rival's company in 1603.
Two years later, his first Court Masquee was performed "to accommodate Queen Anne’s desire to appear as a Negress".
One of his major plays – Volpone- was performed at the Globe and two universities.
Jonson also wrote two epitaphs for his first daughter and son: "On My First Daughter" (c. 1595) and "On His First Sonne" (1603) which were both published in his folio of 1616.

William Arthur Philip Louis Mountbatten-Windsor (Prince William) was born on 21 June 1982 in London. On 4 August 1982 he was christened in the music room of Buckingham Palace.

Family
Prince William is the older son of the Prince of Wales (Prince Charles) and the Princess of Wales (Diana) and has a younger brother, Prince Harry. His parents split-up at the end of 1992, which was announced by John Major, the then Prime Minister; 4 years later, on 28 August 1996, their marriage was dissolved, but Princess Diana stayed at Kensington Palace (). When Prince William was 15, his mother was killed in a car crash.

Thomas Cromwell was born around 1485 in Putney, Middlesex and died on 28 July 1540 at the Tower of London.

Not much is known about his early life (starting with the exact year of his birth), but Cromwell - just like his mentor Cardinal Wolsey - came from humble origins.

Cromwell studied law and became an employee of Cardinal Wolsey. After Wolsey’s downfall in 1529, he gained the King's trust and was appointed a royal counsellor.

In 1532 Thomas Cromwell became the King's chief minister. His career skyrocketed and he had a lot of political authority. Cromwell was also named Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal and Secretary of State. He now had influence over the King's correspondence, too.

Cromwell was among the men who were in favour of King Henry as the Head of the English Church. He also took care of the Act of Supremacy in 1534. Cromwell played a huge role in the English Reformation and he was mainly responsible for the dissolution of the monasteries.

After Jane Seymour’s death in 1537, he urged the King to remarry soon. He intended the King to have a Protestant wife - Anne of Cleves - to strengthen the relation to German Protestants. Cromwell praised Anne's beauty and after King Henry had seen a portrait of her by Holbein, he agreed to the marriage. Unfortunately, Anne was not as beautiful as the portrait promised and the marriage was never consummated. Cromwell had to take care of the divorce and some of his enemies saw their chance to further weaken Cromwell's position at court.

Before Cromwell lost the King's favour, he was made Earl of Essex on 18 April 1540, a title that only lasted for almost two months. Cromwell was arrested on 10 June 1540, stripped of all his titles and taken to the Tower of London. He was accused of high treason and heresy. On 30 June, Cromwell wrote a letter to the King, begging him to have "mercy, mercy, mercy".

On 28 July 1540 he was beheaded at the Tower of London. Unfortunately for him, the executioner did a rather sloppy work and did not manage to kill Cromwell at the first swing of his axe. The excution of Thomas Cromwell (played by James Frain) was also shown in the TV series The Tudors and can be watched here.

It is said that King Henry soon regretted his decision to sentence Cromwell to death and mourned his loss.

Thomas Cromwell was a great uncle of Oliver Cromwell.

Cat: /* Catholicism in England */

The Merriam-Webster Catholic Dictionary defines Catholicism as ”the faith, doctrine, system and practice of the Catholic church”. The Catholic Church distinguishes itself from other Christian faiths (e.g. Protestantism) through its firm dogmas. It is supposed to have been founded by Christ himself when He made Saint Peter “the rock “ on which He built the church. The Pope of the Roman Catholic Church sees himself as the successor of Saint Peter.

Dogmas and Doctrines
The most important Catholic dogmas and doctrines include:
*Belief in the Holy Trinity (God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit). These are three persons in one God. This is commonly known as “the mystery of the Trinity”.

*Transsubstantiation during the celebration of the mass the Eucharist is believed to change the host to the body of Christ and the communion wine into the blood of Christ.

*Immaculate conception: the belief that Mary the mother of Christ, was born without original sin, that Mary did not have a sinful nature, and was in fact sinless.

*Virgin birth: Mary, mother of Christ, is a virgin.

*Papal infallibility: due to the help by the Holy Spirit, the Pope cannot err when he teaches ex cathedra. Although the claim of Papal infallibility can be seen throughout the history of the Catholic Church, it has only become a dogma after the First Vatican Council in 1870.

*Purgatory: place between heaven and hell. A place of temporal punishment. At the conclusion of this punishment, the individual’s soul passes into heaven.

*Saints as important mediators between God and humans.

*Special position of priests as (human) mediators between God and humans.

*Seven Sacraments

*Indulgences, based on the medieval Catholic doctrine that sinners must not only repent of sins that they have committed, but that they must also confess these sins and pay some sort of retribution. Indulgence is a sort of retribution. This was one bone of contention with the early Protestant church.

*Other features of the Catholic church include the highly ritualistic nature of Mass (songs, incantations, incense, holy water, church music). The church house has an altar and a tabernacle (where the monstrance with a consecrated host is kept). Catholic churches do not forgo ornamentation (as Protestant churches do). There are statues and images of God, Jesus, Mary and the saints. Often there are also saints' relics and other magical or mysterious objects of worship.

Organisation
The Catholic Church has a strict hierarchical structure. At the pinnacle is the Pope, who is a mediator between God and man. The Pope is only relieved of his position by death. A new pope is elected in a conclave of Cardinals.

Cardinals are appointed by the Pope and they are directly answerable to the Vatican. Apart from electing the Pope, "most cardinals have additional duties, such as leading a diocese or archdiocese or running a department of the Roman Curia" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardinal_(Catholicism)).
Next in the Catholic hierarchy are the archbishops and bishops as heads of an archdiocese or diocese. Then come the priests who see to the affairs of the parishes. Priests study theology, after which they take an oath of celibacy and are then ordained by a bishop.

Catholicism in England
In England the strength of the Catholic church started dwindling with Henry VIII as a result of the king's inability to convince the papal court to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. Since he was desperate to marry Anne Boleyn, who, Henry hoped, would provide him with a male heir, the king dismissed Cardinal Wolsey and brought in Thomas Cranmer and Thomas Cromwell - both sympathizers with the new ideas of Martin Luther. The Reformation Parliament (1529-1531) saw a gradual shift of power from Pope to king, culminating in the Act of Supremacy (1534), which stopped all contribution and allegiance to the Roman Catholic Church. The king of England became the ”supreme head of the Church” (see also: course documents/Renaissance culture/sessions 2, 3 and 5).

Mary Tudor (“Bloody Mary”) tried to re-Catholicise England, with much blood shed but no long-term success. The next and last overt Catholic on the throne was James II (1685-1688). English Catholics once again saw some religious freedom granted in the Declaration of Indulgence of 1687, suspending the Test Acts. Thereby Catholics were able to take part in the military and hold posts in government. Unfortunately for Catholicism in England, James’ overt and radical pro-Catholicism brought his doom and led to the so-called Glorious Revolution, which ousted James and brought in a die-hard Calvinist, William of Orange. The Bill of Rights (1689) served as a final nail on the coffin of Catholicism in England the Catholics had been once and for all reduced to a position of inferiority. According to these laws, no Roman Catholic is allowed to become king/queen of England.
