She was educated at the Dominican Convent High School in Salsbury, she left school and was self-educated. Later she worked as nursemaid and as a telephone operator. She wrote many novels as for instance &#039;&#039;The Grass Is Singing&#039;&#039; (1950), &#039;&#039;The Golden Notebook&#039;&#039; (1962), &#039;&#039;The Good Terrorist&#039;&#039; (1985) or &#039;&#039;The Fifth Child&#039;&#039; (1988), &#039;&#039;The Summer Before the Dark&#039;&#039; (1973),&#039;&#039;Mara and Dann&#039;&#039; (1999).&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Together with Simone de Beavoir who wrote &#039;&#039;The Second Sex&#039;&#039;, she played an important part in the Women&#039;s Movement of the 1960s. She published &#039;&#039;The Golden Notebook&#039;&#039;. This novel presents the us with the current socio-political problems of the time, and Lessing describes women&#039;s situation during this period.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In 2007 she won the Nobel Prize of Literature. Among other prizes she also received Premio Principe de Asturias in 2001, the Prix Medici and the David Cohen Prize in 2001. During the 80&#039;s Lessing she tried to publish her novels under a pseudonym, Jane Somer. The reason for which she did this was to demonstrate how difficult it is for new authorsto get published their novels. &lt;br /&gt;
