1874-1929. Austrian novelist, dramatist and poet. Wrote the libretti for several of Richard Strauss's operas. Published the "Lord Chandos Letter" in 1902 - a fictitious letter allegedly written in 1603 by Philip, Lord Chandos, and yet a deeply modern text that articulates the crisis of representation at the fin de siècle.
