22 October 1919 in Persia - 17 November 2013. British novelist, poet, librettist, journalist and Nobel Prize winner.

She was educated at the Dominican Convent High School in Salsbury, but left school early. Later she worked as nursemaid and telephone operator. She wrote many novels as for instance The Grass Is Singing (1950), The Golden Notebook (1962), The Good Terrorist (1985) or The Fifth Child (1988), The Summer Before the Dark (1973), Mara and Dann (1999).

Together with Simone de Beauvoir, she played an important part in the Women's Movement of the 1960s. In 1962 she published The Golden Notebook. This novel presents the us with the current socio-political problems of the time, and Lessing describes women's situation during this period.

In 2007 she won the Nobel Prize of Literature. Among other prizes she also received the Premio Principe de Asturias in 2001, the Prix Medici and the David Cohen Prize in 2001. During the 1980s Lessing tried to publish her novels under a pseudonym, Jane Somers. The reason for which she did this was to demonstrate how difficult it is for new authors to get their novels published.
