1566-1625. Son of Mary, Queen of Scots and Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley. As James VI King of Scotland: 1567-1625. Successor of Elizabeth I on the English throne as James I of England: 1603-1625. Convinced of the Divine Right of Monarchs. A version of this attitude towards his rule is the "Apotheosis of James I" by Peter Paul Rubens on the ceiling of the Banqueting House, Whitehall. Father of Charles I.
