1929-1994. British playwright. Started as actor and founded his reputation as one of the innovators of British theatre and drama with Look Back in Anger (1956). Later plays include The Entertainer (1957, starring Laurence Olivier in the title role) and A Patriot for Me (1965), a drama about the Austro-Hungarian officer Redl and his homosexuality, one of the plays which triggered heated discussions and - in 1968 - led to the abolition of stage censorship.
