Duke of Monmouth

James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth. Also known as James Crofts or James Fitzroy. 1649 - 1685. The eldest illegitimate son of Charles II.
Since Charles II had no legitimate children, the Duke of Monmouth hoped to succeed his father on the throne. In fact, the throne went to his uncle, Charles II' Catholic brother James II.
In 1685, the Duke of Monmouth was captured and executed after making an unsuccessful attempt to depose James II (Monmouth Rebellion).
