Nickname for the first generation of Caribbean immigrants in Britain.

The SS Empire Windrush arrived in Tilbury, Essex, in June 1948; on board were 492 immigrants from Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago. Many of them had fought for Britain during the Second World War and had been invited to overcome labour shortages. In cultural memory, this moment marks the beginning of post-war mass migration.
