Satirical ballad opera by John Gay first performed in 1728. Hugely popular in its own day, it became the model for numerous adaptations, among them a version by the composer Benjamin Britten (1948) and the play, Dreigroschenoper (1928), by Bert Brecht. It was received as social satire.
