Regarding the British Parliament, an election held to fill a seat in the House of Commons that has become vacant due to the death, resignation or ennoblement of a Member of Parliament. By-elections occur between the regular elections (i.e. general elections) at which a new Parliament is elected; a by-election, by contrast, only concerns the constituency that needs to send a new representative to Parliament.
