Someone who writes plays, i.e. dramas, texts meant for performance.

Famous Renaissance playwrights were William Shakespeare, Ben Jonson or Christopher Marlowe.

Famous Restoration playwrights were John Dryden, George Etherege, William Wycherley, Aphra Behn and William Congreve.
