Spanish Civil War

1936-1939. War of the republican government against nationalist, militarist and fascist rebels. In the end, General Francisco Franco emerged victorious and established a dictatorship that lasted until his death in 1975. Many left-wing intellectuals volunteered to fight for the republican side, e.g. Stephen Spender, who once called the conflict "the poets' war".
